Life as a Transsexual in Barcelona

“Barcelona is a liberal city with a vast community of gays, transgenders and transsexuals. It is a colorful microcosm in which it’s easy to lose oneself”, writes Paola de Grenet at the beginning of her excellent portofolio Life as a Transsexual.

I will add that it is a microcosm to which is also easy to belong…

Despite my bittersweet feelings when seeing the documentary –and especially now, when sharing it here–, I know I must explain that I have had a close relationship with this world of –mostly unwilling– sex-workers, through dear persons who once belonged in it for a time; who exhibited their bodies, performed on stages or even walked the streets to pay for their hormonal treatments and/or simply to eat, have a place to sleep and make their living.

Trans-people live always a tough life, they are always in the fringes of society and submitted to continuous despise, menaces and great danger. The only good part when speaking of Barcelona and Catalonia in general, is that they find here a little more respect and quite more acceptance than in most other places in this world.

I send my hearty gratitude to the author of this social documentary, for her fair and sympathetic words and pictures, and also to Edge of Humanity Magazine for having published it. Thank you so much!  ❤✨
