Déjà vu, déjà vécu – A Humble Defence of Hentai Manga

I like manga, and now also hentai manga (yaoi-oriended), because I find in it some illustrations very difficult (perhaps impossible) to see elsewhere. Twenty-five, and more, years ago nobody could draw a teen girl showing her “pee” like this one here… No way; no possible public acceptance.

Boys could be gay, could be effeminate, could be “trannies” (still with some issues and many prejudices related to it), but they could not be girls; even less, attractive and seductive girls.

Homosexuality (and perhaps, in this case, paedophilia) would have been the only available concept to qualify the intention behind a drawing like the one I show here. “Faggot and “sissy” and “slut”, the words to call the person depicted with the attitude depicted.

There was one such person in my family –a girl born, physically, a boy–. Until her first puberty she had no problem with having masculine genitals, and was not shy to show them in the bathroom at home or the beach. At the apparent age of the character drawn in this cartoon, she had begun to develop a concern about her body, the consequent shyness and, of course, she would not pose naked on a beach (even less showing off). However, she would be there naked, like my mother or I, if we were alone or there were nobody nearby). So, she never had any dysphoria (which is very frequent among transgender people, especially teenaged trans-people).

Hentai has a manifest intention to provoke and to arouse; it is undoubtedly pornography –at least in most cases. But it has been determinant in the acceptation of girly boys and t-girls with masculine genitals. It has revealed the existence of a growing public who likes them, or feels interest in them. It has also contributed to enlarge this public. And this is a truly good thing, because it works wonderfully against the dysphoria of many youth. Trans-girls feel they can be –they are!– attractive and pretty despite having a penis and a scrotum. As much attractive as if they had a vulva. Some of them have naturally small breast (my sister had them from twelve y.o. or so), the majority don’t; some will take feminine hormones sooner or later, some of them won’t, but all of them have the right to be girls and be accepted and treated as girls, disregarding any other consideration beyond their genuine will.

Just the same is, of course, valid with respect to trans-boys, or queer persons who consider themselves bigendered, androgynous or anything else, in or out of the gender binary. I do not know of hentai cartoons with trans-masculine characters, but there are lots of them with mixed, intersexual, queer and androgynous persons. I am one among these persons as well, and thus, my opinion is not an unfounded one, not a whim. Hentai does not do any harm to us; very much the other way round.

I do really hope not to hurt anybody’s feelings with this post. I do know it may be disliked and disagreed, but I just frankly expose my reasons and my views on a growingly followed form of illustration and animation. Of course, any discrepancy will be accepted, respected and readily answered here.

[A final point: I have selected this particular image among many possible ones (some even better) because it recalls me much of a time long past away and, most especially, of that person so close, recently gone, when she was a very young teen –the resemblance is remarkable in many respects!]
